Five players were shot by gunmen who opened fire at a football match on Sunday afternoon in the town of Delgado, 5 km northeast of the capital El Salvador, reported elsalvador.com.
According to reports, the gunmen appeared at the end of the match between Transit and Saint Margaret II and shot dead five people who were playing for the Transit amateur football team, also seriously injuring at least one other person.
Police believe the gunmen, who are still at large, are members of a local criminal gang. The murders reflect an escalation of gang violence in El Salvador, where according to official figures, in the first half of this year there were 2,865 murders, up from 1,840 in the same period of 2014.
