MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Tayyab Agha, Taliban’s political office chief based in Qatar, announced he was stepping down and said he would not support any side in the ongoing dispute, according to The National daily.
Agha called the group’s decision to keep the news of Omar’s death a secret a "historical mistake," according to the Dubai-based publication.
Previously, the Taliban’s spokesman said Mansour was not chosen "by all Taliban," and signaled that the group will meet to pick a new successor.
Omar was the founder and spiritual leader of the Taliban, which ruled most of Afghanistan in the 1990s until its overthrow by NATO-led forces in 2001.
The second round of peace talks between the group and the Afghan government in Pakistan have been suspended since the announcement of Omar’s death.
