MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Sunday, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon ordered security forces to implement administrative detention of suspects in torching a house in a Palestinian village in the West Bank. The arson resulted in the death of a small child and caused serious injuries to family members. Mayer was arrested without trial on Tuesday,
The parents said that their 18-year-old son was taken from their house “without any suspicion or indictment,” according to the Jerusalem Post news portal.
“We thought this was a state with laws and democracy,” the suspect’s father Gedalya Mayer said, cited by the media.
Ya'alon authorized the use of administrative detention, normally used to keep suspected Palestinian militants in detention, against Israeli terrorists over the weekend.
The current decree allows for the detention of Mayer for six months after which a judge would need to renew the decree. Two other arson suspects were also arrested this week.
Mayer was previously arrested for an alleged role in the torching of a Church in Northern Israel, but he was not indicted.
