MOSCOW (Sputnik) — “ISIS [ISIL] published the names of about 2,000 people that have been executed during the past few days,” Giyas Surja said, as quoted by the local IraqiNews portal on Wednesday.
He added that the majority of those executed were “members of the security services and the staff of the election commission and government institutions.”
The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), is an extremist group that operates mainly in Iraq and Syria, where it has captured large territories.
ISIL took Iraq’s second largest city, Mosul, in June 2014 after the US-trained and equipped Iraqi Army fled the area, leaving behind significant amounts of US military hardware.
