MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Syria's opposition seeks to create a unified command that will serve as the country's national security force and ensure stability during power transition, head of the Syrian National Coalition Khaled Khoja said Thursday.
"We have started holding consultative meetings with representatives of the Free Syrian Army and military fractions, except those that have been declared terrorist organizations, and we are now seeking to create a supreme military command, which will form the core of future national security forces," Khoja told RIA Novosti.
"They will play an important role in ensuring stability in Syria during the transitional period," he added.
Syria has been mired in a civil war since 2011. The country’s government is fighting a number of rebel groups as well as radical Islamist militant organizations, including the Nusra Front and the Islamic State.
