Japanese Emperor Expresses 'Deep Remorse' for Tokyo's Actions in WWII

Japanese Emperor Akihito expressed deep remorse over the Tokyo’s actions in World War II during Saturday's ceremony, commemorating the 70th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in the war, local media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – On Friday, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also expressed remorse for Tokyo’s actions during World War II in a speech dedicated to the anniversary of the war’s end.

“Reflecting on our past and bearing in mind the feelings of deep remorse over the last war, I earnestly hope that the ravages of war will never be repeated,” Akihito said, as quoted by The Japan Times newspaper.

He added that on the anniversary day his thoughts were with the people killed during the war.

Japan committed numerous human rights abuses during its military intervention in China and other Asian countries in the 1930s and in World War II.

The Empire of Japan and Nazi Germany, along with the Kingdom of Italy, comprised the original Axis alliance during World War II, fighting against Allied forces including the Soviet Union, the United States, the United Kingdom and others.

On August 15, 1945, Japan announced the termination of the war and Tokyo’s unconditional surrender.
