A German entrepreneur who runs Russia's major plant for the production of dairy products said that Russia’s food embargo designed to ban imports of certain Western products helps the Russian agricultural sector.

A year ago, Stefan Dürr advised Russian President Vladimir Putin in a personal conversation to respond to economic sanctions imposed by the West. In an interview with the German newspaper, the businessman said that now he would give the Russian President the same advice.

Dürr is convinced that sanctions have a positive effect on the Russian agricultural sector.

“The food embargo on western products helps the Russian agriculture. I recently had a visit from one of the major buyers of the company Metro in Russia. Earlier, it was extremely difficult for domestic manufactures to be included in Metro’s list. There were entry fees, and the goods were often paid only after eight or twelve weeks. Meanwhile, however, Metro is desperately looking for Russian suppliers. It is even ready to pre-finance manufacturing of new products,” the businessman said.

Dürr is sure that despite certain difficulties many companies in Russia are heading to the next level. Earlier, Russian peasants were mostly pure raw material suppliers. Meanwhile, they have not only enhanced their manufacturing, but also started to process products, he said.

“My own enterprise Ekoniva is not only selling raw milk now, but also products such as yogurt, cottage cheese and butter. So, we are opening up completely new areas,” Dürr stated.
