WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that Putin is planning to attend the UN Security Council session. Lavrov also said that a meeting between Putin and Obama would be possible if the White House initiated it.
"The President’s UNGA schedule is not yet set so we have no engagements there to announce at this time," the official said.
The 70th session of the UN General Assembly is scheduled to open at UN Headquarters on September 15.
Putin addressed UN General Assembly in 2000, 2003 and 2005.
Relations between Russia and the United States deteriorated in the spring of 2014, following Crimea's secession from Ukraine and its reunification with Russia. The internal conflict in eastern Ukraine, which began in April 2014, further contributed to the worsening of US-Russia ties.
Washington has accused Moscow of meddling in Ukraine's internal affairs and imposed several rounds of economic sanctions.
Russia has consistently refuted the allegations, stating it stands for a peaceful settlement of the internal conflict in Ukraine. Moreover, Russia has repeatedly stated it was ready to resume dialogue with the West, but on the basis of equality and mutual respect.
