WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Washington sees an opening for US-Russian cooperation based on the recent trilateral talks between US, Russian, and Saudi Arabian officials on a peace process in Syria, US State Department spokesman John Kirby said on Thursday.
"We think there is an opening here for us to continue to work with Russia on a political transition in Syria," Kirby told journalists.
The spokesman noted US State Secretary John Kerry views the three-party talks on Syria as "very constructive."
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Saudi Arabian counterpart Adel Ahmed al-Jubeir continued the talks in Moscow on August 11.
The State Department announced on Thursday that the newly appointed Special Envoy for Syria, Michael Ratney will be traveling next week to meet with officials in Moscow, Riyadh and Geneva to continue talks on Syrian resolution.
The trilateral talks are taking place under the auspices of the UN, which unanimously passed a Security Council resolution on August 7 to open discussions on a political transition in Syria to resolve the four-year civil war.
