BALI (Sputnik) — Sam Ratulangi Airport International Airport in northern Indonesia was shut down on Sunday following a nearby volcanic eruption, the country’s state airport operator said.
The Indonesian airport operator Angkasa Pura’s spokesman Ilham Sakti said all aircraft had been grounded overnight and the airport would stay closed until at least 9:00 am this morning, according to the national news agency Antara.
The 5,177-foot volcano has been active since Friday. In 2010, an eruption prompted the evacuation of almost 5,500 residents from villages on its slopes.
