The European Union has to create immigration policy based on solidarity, a German lawmaker Andrej Hunko from left-wing Die Linke party told Sputnik.

MOSCOW, September 3 (Sputnik), Daria Chernyshova — Andrej Hunko said:

"We need a European immigration policy that is orientated on solidarity. It’s high time that the German government concluded an Immigration Act that underlines that Germany is a country of immigration."

Changing German Constitution to Tackle Migrant Crisis Illogical – Lawmaker
The lawmaker welcomed Germany’s August decision to suspend the Dublin System for Syrian refugees. Under the regulation, receiving EU member countries have to store fingerprints and asylum claims to prevent multiple applications in different EU states. The system has been criticized for placing refugees under risk of return and persecution in their home countries.

"The Dublin System is an unfair distribution of asylum seekers across EU member States. The system is actually dead, this becomes more and more clear," he added.

However, Andrej Hunko condemned changes to the German constitution which give German police more power to stop refugees proposed by country's Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere.

“The minister also wants to give more powers to police authorities, enhance border controls and maybe change the asylum system. This means more controlling and patrolling, which we will strongly resist,” the lawmaker said, adding that this constitution change is not a viable solution to the problem.

Hunko said that to resolve the refugee crisis, Germany needs a change in many areas such education, housing or health care.

Europe is experiencing a massive migration crisis, as thousands of people attempt to cross into the bloc, fleeing violence in their home countries.

Over 340,000 undocumented migrants managed to illegally enter the bloc in the first seven months of 2015, according to EU external border protection agency Frontex.
