CHISINAU (Sputnik) — About 200 people on Monday held a rally outside the main government building in the Moldovan capital of Chisinau, where the thousands of activists gathered the previous day.

On Sunday, numerous protesters from across the country took part in the demonstrations and setting up the tents in the center of Chisinau, calling on the country's president, Nicolae Timofti, and government to resign following corruption scandals.

"They [protesters] will keep on coming until the government fulfills our demands… Protests will be peaceful," political scientist Igor Botsan, who attended Monday's rally, said.

The protests were sparked by the disappearance last year of more than $1 billion, or the equivalent of 15 percent of the country's total gross domestic product (GDP), from three Moldovan banks. The incident negatively impacted on the country's banking system and depreciated the national currency, the leu.

According to Moldovan officials, about 40,000 people gathered for the demonstrations on Sunday, but the protests' organizers put the number of demonstrators at 100,000.
