STRASBOURG (Sputnik) – During his State of the Union Address before the European Parliament. Juncker said:
“There is a lack of Europe in the European Union and a lack of union in the European Union. That has to change, and we have to change that right now and work together.”
“Schengen will not be abolished under this current commission,” he stated.
European news agencies earlier reported that the Schengen Agreement on free movement between the member states could be abolished in order to better control illegal migrants.
The Schengen Agreement was signed on June 14, 1985, leading to the creation of Europe's borderless space. Most EU member states, as well as four non-EU countries, are members of the zone.
Europe is struggling to cope with a massive migration crisis, as thousands of people attempt to cross into the bloc, fleeing violence in their home countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
