BUDAPEST (Sputnik) — About 1,000 refugees set out on foot on Thursday from the Hungarian city of Sopron to the country's border with Austria, national TV Channel M1 reported.

Migrant Crisis Expanding: Migrants Detained on Ukraine's Borders With EU
On Thursday, a dozen trains departed from Budapest's Keleti railway station heading to Austria. The passengers, many of whom were refugees, disembarked in the city of Sopron, which is located almost five miles from the Austrian border, according to the broadcaster.

Hungary is one of several EU countries hardest-hit by the ongoing migrant crisis, as hundreds of thousands of people flee their homelands in the Middle East, North and Sub-Saharan Africa in the hope of finding refuge in the European Union.

Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs said on Thursday that the number of refugees crossing into Hungary from outside the European Union had reached 172,000 since early 2015.
