BUDAPEST (Sputnik) — About 1,000 refugees set out on foot on Thursday from the Hungarian city of Sopron to the country's border with Austria, national TV Channel M1 reported.
Earlier in the day, Austrian Federal Railways suspended all rail services to and from Hungary, adding that all trains between Budapest and Vienna would be suspended until further notice.
Hungary is one of several EU countries hardest-hit by the ongoing migrant crisis, as hundreds of thousands of people flee their homelands in the Middle East, North and Sub-Saharan Africa in the hope of finding refuge in the European Union.
Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs said on Thursday that the number of refugees crossing into Hungary from outside the European Union had reached 172,000 since early 2015.
