NICKELSDORF (Austria) (Sputnik) — Some 1,600 migrants have arrived at the border since Thursday morning, according to the head of the police press service, Helmut Marban.
“We see a constant influx, hundreds of people arrive, up to a thousand," Marban said, adding that police expect the number of refugees to double by nightfall.
The European Union has been beset by a refugee crisis, with thousands of undocumented migrants, mainly from the Middle East and North Africa, arriving in EU member states, fleeing violence and poverty in their home countries.
Many of them use Hungary as a transit point on their journey to wealthier EU states where they intend to apply for asylum.
On Wednesday, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said about 500,000 people have arrived in Europe since the beginning of 2015.
