“The logic was fairly smart but also very immoral… I think some people were carefully preparing [the Ukrainian crisis] in order to pit the increasingly Russian-friendly Europeans against Moscow and thus strengthen America’s foothold in Europe,” Alexei Pushkov, the current head of the State Duma’s Foreign Affairs Committee, said in remarks, carried by Moscow-based Kommersant FM radio station.
Pushkov explained this “logic” also by the fact that, with the Cold War finally over, many people in the West had started questioning the need for the continued US military presence in Europe and the existence of NATO itself.
