"Among the topics on the agenda of the meeting is the withdrawal of heavy and light weapons of up to 100-mm caliber from the contact line," the minister said.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier also noted that the security issues will be the most important subject for discussion during the ministerial level meeting of the so-called Normandy Four group mediating the peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian conflict.
Later in the day, the foreign ministers of the so-called Normandy Quartet, namely Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany, are expected to discuss the peaceful settlement of Ukraine’s crisis at Villa Borsig in Berlin.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier stated that mediators participating in talks on Ukraine's Donbas conflict settlement managed to achieve some progress regarding the humanitarian issues in eastern Ukraine.
According to Steinmeier, in particular, progress has been achieved on granting access of the Red Cross medical organization to the war prisoners in eastern Ukraine.
The minister added that he hopes the talks would lead to some progress regarding the situation in Ukraine.
“There is a positive moment, which gives us the impulse to try and move forward regarding the Minsk deal implementation… Everything is still unstable, but there is an opportunity to reach some progress,” he said.
Steinmeier added that the truce is holding in Ukraine since September 1.
"I think it would be important to come to the local elections, namely, to such local elections that would be held on a legal basis… and for which there would be confidence that the results will be accepted," Steinmeier stated ahead of the ministerial-level meeting of the Normandy Quartet in Berlin.
Earlier in the day, he outlined that the foreign ministers from France, Germany, Russia and Ukraine would discuss the regional elections and constitutional reform in Ukraine, as stipulated in the Minsk peace deal.
