KIEV (Sputnik) – Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, may choose another date for regional elections in those districts of Donbass, where the Ukraine’s authorities will not be able to hold them on October 25, the country’s president said Sunday.
"[If] we cannot provide the activity of the Ukrainian media, Ukrainian parties, safety, protection of the will – it is upon the Verkhovna Rada to declare [local elections] as soon as such an opportunity emerges in those districts where it is impossible to hold elections," Petro Poroshenko said in an interview with Ukraine's 112 television.
According to him, where such a possibility exists, the elections should be held as planned.
Kiev authorities have set the country-wide local elections for October 25. The Lugansk People's Republic is planning to hold separate elections on November 1, while the Donetsk People's Republic has decided to hold the elections on October 18.
