A YouGov poll showed that 29% of Americans could imagine supporting a coup, while 41% said they could not imagine supporting such an operation.
The poll found that 43% of Republicans would support a military coup in certain instances, while only 20% of Democrats and 29% of independents would.
More people said they would be likely to support a military takeover if the government is violating the Constitution. In that case, 43% of Americans would support the military stepping in, while 29% would be opposed.
The same poll found that most people respect military officers much more than they do politicians, as 71% of respondents said military officers put the interests of the country ahead of their own interests, while just 12% thought the same about members of Congress.
Earlier this year, multi-state US military exercise had conspiracy theorists warning that martial law was going to be instituted across the country.
The commotion over the Jade Helm 15 operation even prompted Texas Governor Greg Abbott to call on the State Guard to monitor the drills.
Abraham Wyner, of the University of Pennsylvania, said the YouGov poll, like any online poll, is not truly representative of the US population.
"People who are participating in an online poll are generally attracted to that poll because of some variable, some characteristic which is connected typically to one outcome or the other in that poll," he told the Guardian.
