Palestinian youths clashed with Israeli police at a historic religious site in the Old City of Jerusalem on Tuesday, on what is the third day of unrest and the second day of the Jewish new year.

TEL AVIV (Sputnik) – The Ynet web portal cited officials as saying that young Palestinians inside Al-Aqsa Mosque at the Temple Mount complex threw stones, concrete blocks and fireworks at police on Tuesday.

Police used "riot dispersal methods" and dismantled barricades of shoe racks, iron rods and ropes tied to the mosque's doors. The web outlet said security forces eventually closed the doors of the mosque, with the rioters still inside.

The clashes began early on Sunday when police conducted a late-night security operation search for hidden explosives in East Jerusalem. The raid resulted in the pursuit of several young Arab suspects who fled in the direction of the mosque before barricading themselves inside.

On Monday, an Israeli man lost control of his vehicle and later died of the injuries sustained in a crash suspected to be linked to the stone throwing.

Throwing stones at vehicles carries a prison sentence of up to 20 years under a law passed by the Israeli legislature last summer.
