SZEGED (Sputnik) – Hungary has announced the regions of Csongrad and Bacs-Kiskun have been placed in a state of emergency over the overwhelming influx of refugees, the Hungarian prime minister’s aide on domestic security said Tuesday.
“A crisis situation has been announced because of the influx of refugees and because we closed our borders yesterday,” Gyorgy Bakondi said.
Earlier in the day, Hungarian police said that a record number of migrants — 9,380 — had been intercepted while trying to illegally crossing the border into Hungary on Monday.
The Central European nation has found itself at the epicenter of a migrant crisis that erupted this summer as an unprecedented number of people from North African and Middle Eastern countries sought refuge on European soil.
According to local police, over 190,000 migrants have arrived in Hungary so far in 2015.
