WARSAW (Sputnik) — Kopacz recalled how Poland had received some 86,000 Chechen refugees, fleeing violence during the First Chechen War in the 1990s, and reassured parliament that the country would be able to handle the current migration crisis as well.
"We are now witnessing the biggest humanitarian crisis since the formation of the European Union," Kopacz said at an extraordinary session of the Polish parliament.
According to the prime minister, refugees make up only about 0.3 percent of the total Polish population.
The country has so far confirmed its readiness to accept over 2,000 asylum seekers, who have arrived in Europe having fled violence in the Middle East and North Africa.
Over 500,000 migrants and refugees have arrived in the European Union since the beginning of 2015, according to the European Commission.
