Border clashes between migrants and police broke out Wednesday, injuring at least 30 police officers and 150 migrants. Dozens of migrants were arrested, after which Hungary requested Serbia’s assistance to control the crowds.
Hungary is one of several EU countries experiencing a rapidly escalating migrant crisis, as hundreds of thousands of people flee homelands in the Middle East, North and Sub-Saharan Africa seeking refuge in the European Union.
Over 190,000 migrants, most arriving from the Serbian side, have crossed the Hungarian border illegally this year, according to the country's interior ministry.
