MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian nuclear submarines from the Northern Fleet on Thursday fired cruise missiles as part of drills in the Barents Sea, the Russian Defense Ministry’s Northern Fleet press service head said Thursday.
"During military exercises today from various forces from the Northern Fleet, Antei-class nuclear submarines fired cruise missiles from a submersed position at targets in the Barents Sea," Capt. 1st Rank Vadim Serga told journalists.
He added that the warships participating in the drills had also carried out successful strikes, with all the missiles fired making contact with their surface targets.
"The crew of the Admiral Ushakov destroyer fired a Moskit anti-ship cruise missile at the set target at a military training ground in the Barents Sea at a distance of about 100 kilometers [62 miles]," Serga said, adding that the Rassvet small-size missile ship had successfully fired a Malachite cruise missile at a close range target.
Fourteen warships, four submarines and 10 support vessels will participate in the drill while naval aviation of the Northern Fleet carries out 20 missions using four different types of aircraft.
The drills will last until the end of the week.
