ROME (Sputnik) — Renzi said at a joint press conference with French President Francois Hollande that Italy was ready to create hotspots on its territory and redistribute migrants arriving in the country among the EU states.
The so-called Hotspot approach is designed to quickly identify, register and fingerprinting refugees entering the European Union.
The head of the Italian government stressed that the European Union had been established with the aim to break barriers but not to construct them.
European Council President Donald Tusk said Thursday he would convene an extraordinary Council summit on September 23 amid the current refugee crisis.
The European Union is facing a massive refugee crisis as hundreds of thousands of people, primarily from Syria but mostly from war-torn countries in the Middle East and North Africa, arrive to Europe seeking refuge.
