The international coalition has carried out more than 6,800 airstrikes on ISIL targets in Syria and Iraq since August 2014.
US officials have estimated that the anti-ISIL campaign has killed more than 10,000 militants. The Syrian Network for Human Rights estimate that the coalition airstrikes have been responsible for the deaths of 225 civilians, including 65 children and 37 women, as of August 2015.
ISIL controls large parts of Iraq and Syria, and is notorious for publishing videos of the atrocities it has committed, most notably the beheading of foreign hostages. The group’s affiliates also operate in North Africa, Yemen, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
