The new doctrine also reaffirms Kiev's drive to join NATO.
"President Petro Poroshenko signed a decree that enacted the decision of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council from September 2, 2015 'On the new edition of the Military Doctrine of Ukraine'," according to the site of the Ukraine's president.
According to the revised doctrine, "the actual military threat to Ukraine today is the military aggression of Russia, which includes the temporary occupation of Crimea and aggression in some regions of Donetsk and Lugansk regions."
Moscow has repeatedly denied its military involvement in the conflict in eastern Ukraine while insisting that Crimea's reunification with Russia was the will of the overwhelming majority of Crimea's residents.
