On Thursday, the secretary of Syria’s National Democratic Action Committee, Mais El Krydee, told Sputnik that the exiled opposition parties would roll out a plan to divide the war-torn country at the Astana talks next week, adding that domestic opposition groups planned to boycott the meeting in protest.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – A speaker at the upcoming intra-Syrian reconciliation conference in Kazakhstan's capital Astana refuted claims that exiled opposition groups planned to divide Syria.

"El Krydee acted out of personal motives and her statement does not reflect the position of the internal Syrian opposition," Bassam Bitar, a speaker at the Astana talks and a member of the Movement for Pluralistic Society, said.

Bitar added that El Krydee’s statement was a reaction to the decision by the conference organizers not to invite El Krydee to the negotiating table due to her behavior at the previous round of talks in May 2015.

The Astana-2 conference is scheduled for October 2-4. The May conference saw Syrian opposition groups sign off on a document calling for the withdrawal of foreign mercenaries from the war-torn country and a joint effort to fight extremism.
