UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — The two leaders met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
"Mr. Abe also met with Poroshenko today [September 28] and discussed the situation in Ukraine. He told Poroshenko that the Minsk agreements need to be fully implemented by Ukraine as well," ministry spokesman Yasuhisa Kawamura told RIA Novosti.
Earlier, Polish President Andrzej Duda warned against the ‘freezing’ of the conflict in Ukraine’s southeast during talks with Poroshenko on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
"The President of Poland emphasized the inadmissibility of ‘freezing’ the conflict. Petro Poroshenko and Andrzej Duda condemned pseudo-elections in the occupied territories and agreed that military-technical assistance to Ukraine must be increased," a statement released on the Ukraine's president website on Monday said.
A ceasefire agreement was reached between the two sides last year, but it failed to hold and violence in Ukraine’s southeast escalated at the beginning of 2015.
In February, a peace deal between Kiev and the self-proclaimed People’s Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk (DPR and LPR) was reached after talks between the leaders of Russia, Germany, France and Ukraine in the Belarusian capital, Minsk.
The Minsk deal stipulates, among other things, a full halt to fighting in Ukraine’s southeast and the granting of broader autonomy to DPR and LPR. Russia has accused Kiev of not fulfilling all of its Minsk obligations and has repeatedly called attention to the fact that Kiev authorities are refusing to hold direct dialogue with DPR and LPR.
