MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi said he would welcome Russian airstrikes on ISIL positions in his country, as support provided by the US-led coalition against the group was insufficient.
"No, no one has made statements that [the operation in Iraq] was possible. Hypothetical statements are absolutely inappropriate here," Peskov told journalists.
He said that, as was stated from the very beginning, anti-ISIL operations by Russia are being carried out in Syria at the request of the Syrian authorities.
On Wednesday, the Russian Defense Ministry said Russian combat jets launched their first precision airstrikes on ISIL positions in Syria.
