According to the author, Russia’s military campaign against the Islamic State (ISIL) terrorist group in Syria is fully legitimate.
He explained that the current chaos in the region could spill over in the form of growing radicalization of the Russia Muslim population. In addition, the ongoing turmoil creates the threat of a regional war which could affect both Russian interests and those of the US and major European nations.
Hadar added that unlike during the Cold War, relations between Moscow and traditional US allies in the Middle East – Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Israel – are now quite friendly.
"The idea that Russia will bring stability, peace and prosperity to Syria — and turn average Syrians into Russia’s best friends — runs contrary to the historic American and Soviet experience in the Middle East," the journalist assumed.
The Russian military operation in Syria amounts to a great win for Moscow and at the same time a big loss for Washington, he wrote. The Russian leader is very likely to succeed in the region unlike "the American misadventure in Iraq."
