TOKYO (Sputnik) – The number of Japanese citizens held in China on suspicion of espionage has grown to four after local media learned of the latest detention on Sunday.
"A Japanese woman in her 50s has been detained in China since June," a government source was cited as saying by the Kyodo news agency. The woman is reportedly an employee of a Japanese language school in Tokyo.
The unnamed source said the woman’s visits to China increased in frequency recently, but the purpose of her trips remained unknown.
The outlet cited another Japanese government source as saying a resident of Sapporo in his 60s was detained in Beijing four months ago.
Local media reported on September 30 Chinese special services held three Japanese nationals, one of whom was reported to have been detained near a military facility in May.
