BERLIN (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, Israeli police officers killed a Palestinian who had reportedly attacked a border guard with a knife in Jerusalem. So far, about 20 Palestinians and four Israeli nationals were killed in clashes, including knife attacks, in October.
"It cannot be fully excluded that the situation could spin out of control," Schaefer told journalists.
He added that the authorities of both Israel and Palestine should do their best to reconcile and end the conflict.
The recent spate of attacks follows last month's clashes in the East Jerusalem Temple Mount complex, which houses the Al-Aqsa Mosque, considered the third holiest site in Islam.
Palestinians are seeking the recognition of their independent state on the territories of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, an area partially, and many consider illegally, occupied by Israel.
