"Something has changed since Russia joined in the conflict, complicating our effort towards a political settlement… On the other hand, we need to bend every effort to make sure that the road towards a political process through the formation of a transitional government is not closed because of Russia’s intervention,” the German Foreign Minister emphasized.
On September 30th Russia launched an aerial campaign in Syria against the forces of the Islamic State terrorist group. The Russian airstrikes have intensified over the past few days with 67 sorties made in the past 24 hours alone targeting terrorist positions across the country.
The US-led coalition has been fighting the Islamic State terrorists for more than a year now without any formal request from the Syrian government or a mandate by the UN Security Council.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday that he still hoped that the Western nations will eventually join Russia’s aerial campaign against the terrorists, which is being carried out with the full authorization of the Syrian government.
