Moscow considers the Dutch prime minister's call on Russia to participate in the investigation into the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crash in eastern Ukraine "strange," since Russia was ready to join long ago, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, Rutte called on Russia to cooperate on the MH17 crash criminal investigation, after the Dutch Safety Board published its final version of the official report on the crash.

"We do not quite understand the statement by Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte that Russia should fully cooperate in carrying out a criminal investigation into the circumstances of the Malaysian Boeing crash. This call looks especially strange given we were ready to join in from the very beginning," Zakharova said.

She added that Russia was not permitted to participate in the investigation on various excuses, until the Dutch Safety Board presented the conclusions of its report.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crashed in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on July 17, 2014, killing all 298 people on board.

According to the Dutch Safety Board report, the aircraft crashed as a result of a ground-to-air missile explosion near the left side of the plane.
