"The United States is complicit in the murders to the extent that it sent back individuals who had a genuine fear of persecution in their home countries," Shahshahani said.
On Monday, The Guardian reported that the US government is deporting undocumented immigrants back to Central America where many face immediate threats of violence and death, and some have been killed shortly after their return.
"[T]here was an effort on the part of the US government to detain asylum-seeking mothers and children as a deterrence mechanism and send them back as soon as possible without <…> their claims to asylum <…> heard and adjudicated," Shahshahani said.
The lawyer also noted that numerous complaints have been voiced about the lack of adequate due process and harsh treatment of undocumented immigrants by US immigration officials.
