TALLINN (Sputnik) – Swedish defense spending will expand by 11% or about 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) over the next five years, Swedish Defense Minister, Peter Hultqvist said at a meeting with his Estonian counterpart Hannes Hanso in Stockholm.
“Sweden plans to purchase fighter jets, tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and anti-submarine warfare. Over 100 million euro will be invested in defense infrastructure of the Gotland island,” the Estonian Defense Ministry press service said, following the Thursday meeting.
According to the Swedish Defense Minister, the country also plans to hold a number of military drills, both inside the country and in neighboring states.
Meanwhile, Hanso stressed that Swedish investment in defending the strategic Gotland island would boost Estonian security.
The Estonian side also said it would invest in new military equipment, such as combat vehicles 90 (CV90) and Javelin anti-tank missiles.
