VIENNA (Sputnik) – The IAEA released a statement earlier on Thursday saying activities set out in the "road-map for the clarification of past and present outstanding issues regarding Iran’s nuclear program" referring to possible military dimensions (PMD) were completed. The nuclear watchdog said IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano would issue a final assessment by December 15.
"I can assess the beginning of implementing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action [JCPOA], as far as the IAEA is concerned, as successful," a source in one of the six countries that negotiated the nuclear deal in July told RIA Novosti.
The high-ranking diplomat clarified that IAEA’s statement indicates that Tehran had provided all the requested information to the watchdog.
"Now begins the period when all these documents and material substances are to be analyzed in order to reach the final conclusion regarding this research as to whether it had involved military nuclear applications," the source added.
According to the source, the IAEA held several rounds of consultations with Iran after the latter provided the needed data. Following the talks, the source said the IAEA was "quite optimistic, but there are still many issues to be clarified before a balanced document can be produced."
The diplomat did confirm, however, that Tehran had fully complied with the roadmap’s first phase.
"If the report [expected by December 15] is positive, the PMD issue will be closed," the source concluded.
On July 14, Iran and the P5+1 group consisting of Russia, the United States, China, the United Kingdom, France and Germany signed a historic deal to guarantee the peaceful nature of Tehran's nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.
The same day, Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) and the IAEA signed a roadmap agreement for the clarification of PMD of Iran's past and present nuclear activities.
