MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Sunday, Israeli police announced that concrete walls had been erected between Armon Hanatziv and Jabel Mukaber of Jerusalem, after alleged Palestinian assailants threw rocks at an Israeli vehicle in the neighborhood, killing the driver.
"It's not the right thing to do from a security standpoint. We had a discussion about this in the cabinet, and it was clear that this wasn't the solution. This is something temporary and isolated. We need to deal with terrorism and not build fences that can easily be bypassed," Elkin told Army Radio, as quoted by The Jerusalem Post newspaper.
A recent wave of violence, including several deadly attacks in Israel, was sparked by skirmishes between Palestinian and Israeli security forces at East Jerusalem’s Temple Mount holy site in September.
Palestinians seek the recognition of their independent state on territories of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, partially occupied by Israel, as well as in the Gaza Strip.
Palestinians have designated Jerusalem as their capital and have called on Israel to return territories seized in the 1967 Six-Day War.
