MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The recapture was announced in a statement from the country's military, which was cited by the Shafaq News website. The city and the nearby area of Albu Javari were retaken at 4 pm local time (13:00 GMT). They have since been cleared of landmines and other explosives planted by the retreating militants.

Baiji is a key industrial center known for its oil refinery and a power plant.

On Wednesday, the Iraqi Air Force continued airstrikes against ISIL positions in the western Anbar province killing eight ISIL fighters, a military official told the Iraqi outlet.
