MEXICO (Sputnik) — Jimmy Morales, former Guatemalan TV comedian achieved victory in Sunday country’s presidential election, the data published on the website of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) of Guatemala said Monday.
With 95,57 percent of the vote counted Morales gathered support of some 70 percent of voters, according to the TSE data. His rival, former first lady Sandra Torres won about 31 percent and conceded her defeat.
Earlier in the day, Morales announced his victory and promised to fight corruption. During his electoral campaign he stood for resolution of food and educational problems. He also promised to contribute to the development of the entrepreneurship in the country.
On September 3, former Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina resigned amid a major corruption scandal, and his decision was unanimously accepted by country's Congress. Soon after that he was arrested.
