NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — Parrikar will travel to Russia on Friday and is planning to discuss the purchase of two Russian Kilo-class diesel-powered attack submarines of the Project 877 Paltus model, according to the Indian Tehelka news magazine.
Russia's Project 877EKM is the export version of the Kilo-class submarine series. So far, a total of 18 submarines have been delivered to India, Iran, China, Poland, Romania and Algeria.
Currently, India already operates nine submarines of this kind.
India and Russia have enjoyed good relations since the 1960s underpinned by Russia's position as New Delhi’s foremost military supplier, particularly in the post-Cold War era.
