A week after the worst catastrophe in the history of Russia’s civil aviation, the world media is awash with conflicting theories about what really happened, while Russian authorities are asking everyone to hold off on their ideas until the investigation is completed.

The crash claimed the lives of all 224 people on board, and its mysterious cause has yet to be determined. Authorities from both Russia and Egypt assert that there’s no reason to suspect terrorism at this time, and that the only thing that’s known at this time is that the airliner fell apart while in mid-air.

The Western media coverage about this tragic event is quite different from what everyone remembers with MH17 crush, and it raises questions about the degree that foreign actors are exploiting such catastrophes in order to reinforce their political narrative.

To discuss this further, we are joined by Vladimir Sotnikov, Director of the East-West strategic studies center, Moscow-based think-tank; Bryce Swerhun, researcher, who did a project about the political risk of civilian air transportation in conflict zones, City University of Hong Kong, and Vladimir Mikheev, Moscow-based independent expert.
