"US forces conducted an airstrike in Raqqa, Syria, on November 12, 2015 targeting Mohamed Emwazi, also known as "Jihadi John", the Pentagon said in a statement Thursday.

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said that Washington was still evaluating the effectiveness of the strike in the de facto capital of Islamic State and that it was not yet clear if the extremist had been successfully eliminated.

"We are assessing the results of tonight's operation and will provide additional information as and where appropriate," Cook said.

"We are 99 percent sure we got him," a senior US military official told Fox News broadcaster Friday.

If “Jihadi John’s” death is confirmed, it would be an important milestone in the US-led campaign against the terrorist group.

Mohammed Emwazi was a London-based British citizen and computer programing graduate. He appeared in videos released by Islamic State last year that showed the killings of US journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and US aid worker Peter Kassig.

The videos also showed the deaths of British aid workers David Haines and Alan Henning, Japanese journalist Kenji Goto, and other hostages.
