MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday, the Pentagon said that Mohamed Emwazi, a 26-year-old British national of Kuwaiti descent, and one of the most notorious members of ISIL, was targeted in a US airstrike in Raqqa, Syria. Earlier on Friday, US media reported that Washington was almost certain that the jihadist was killed in the airstrike.
"Last night the United States carried out an airstrike in Raqqa, Syria, targeting Mohamed Emwazi, the ISIL executioner known as Jihadi John. We cannot yet be certain if the strike was successful," Cameron told a press briefing.
In Thursday's statement, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said Washington was assessing the results of the airstrike and it was not yet clear if the extremist had been killed.
Cameron stressed that "this was an act of self-defense, it was a right thing to do," as Emwazi was intent on continuing his high-profile campaign of violence.
Emwazi was identified in February by US media, and is known for appearing in a number of videos showing the beheading of British and US aid workers and journalists.
