WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Defense Department will not share details of the operation to seal off the Turkey’s northern border with Syria, Pentagon spokesperson Elissa Smith told Sputnik.
On Tuesday, US Secretary of State John Kerry announced that Washington is entering an operation with the Turks to close 98 kilometers of the Syrian border.
“While I won’t get into operations details, the Secretary’s statement today reflects our determination to continue working with Turkey and all Coalition partners to achieve this,” Smith said on Tuesday.
The spokesperson added that closingTurkey-Syria border has been “one of our key goals within our broader effort” to defeat the Islamic State (ISIL).
On Monday, US President Barack Obama said it is important to limit the space where the IS can operate in Syria and put Damascus on path toward reconciliation in order to eliminate the terrorist threat.
