ROME (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi also called for creation of a broader coalition to fight IS.
"For us it is obvious that [our] rival is terrorism and the IS. Italian government exerts efforts…to extend the [anti-terrorist] coalition with admission of Russia in its members," Gentiloni said.
A US-led international coalition of some 60 nations has been conducting airstrikes against IS in Syria since 2014, without the approval of the UN Security Council or the Syrian government.
On September 30, Russia began a separate anti-IS air campaign in Syria at the request of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
