"An anti-terrorist coalition must surely be the best way forward," a member of EU External Affairs Sub-Committee in the House of Lords, Lord Dubs, said when asked about the idea to create a broad coalition against Islamic State jihadist group, first voiced by Putin at the UN General Assembly in September. "Hopefully the shooting down of the [Russian] aircraft will not do more than delay such a coalition."
On Tuesday, a Russian Su-24 jet crashed in Syria. Putin said that the plane was downed by an air-to-air missile launched by a Turkish F-16 jet over Syrian territory, falling 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from the Turkish border. Putin described the Turkish attack as a "stab in the back" carried out by "accomplices of terrorists."
A US-led international coalition, including France, has been conducting airstrikes against ISIL in Syria and Iraq since 2014 without the approval of the UN Security Council or the Syrian government. Russia launched its own air campaign against the extremists in Syria on September 30 at the request of Damascus.
