VIENNA (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, Russian envoy to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said Russia had begun consultations with other member states to toughen resolution 2199, which condemns trade with al-Qaeda affiliates, specifically the Nusra Front and IS. Moscow considers the resolution to be poorly controlled and implemented at the moment.
"It all will depend on how the voting process goes, what opinions will be voiced by other states, what amendments introduced… We would like to [hold the vote] as quickly as possible, given that the problem is very serious and demand the most careful attention and quick decision,” Gatilov told RIA Novosti.
The Russian deputy foreign minister added that resolution 2199, which was adopted in February, has not yet provided any practical results in the fight against Daesh, a terrorist group outlawed in Russia.
In October, a US Treasury Department spokesperson told Sputnik that IS had derived up to $1.5 billion in revenue from looting banks and illicit oil proceeds, having captured several oil fields.
