Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter Islamic State Brett McGurk has arrived to Baghdad to meet with the Iraqi government and security officials, US State Department said in a press release on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United Kingdom and Germany have recently announced their new safety and security strategies, pledging to strengthen anti-terror measures.

After taking office last year Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced that an initial investigation had discovered 55 thousand ghost soldiers in the army - those who were being paid but did not exist, with their salaries instead going into the pockets of officers. - Sputnik International

“During his meetings, the Special Presidential Envoy will discuss the Coalition’s support for Iraqi-led efforts to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL [Islamic State], as well as recent developments in the region,” the release said.

After the meetings in Baghdad, McGurk will travel to the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Germany and the United Kingdom, according to the State Department.

During the visits, the special envoy will discuss ways to intensify US-led coalition efforts against the Islamic State, also known by its Arabic acronym Daesh.
